Admission to LL.M. is based on the merit of the marks obtained by the candidates in the Common Admission Test (CAT) and performance of the candidate during Viva-Voce to be conducted by the Institute after CAT.
The duration of the course is 2 years comprising of 4 semesters. However, the students have an option to complete the course within one and a half years under special circumstances with the prior approval of the Academic Programme Committee. In such a case, the student has to produce publishable research papers & dissertation before he/she could be granted the leave to finish the entire course in 1½ years. Students would be graded out of the maximum 1500 marks as per teaching scheme. The following guidelines have been prescribed by the Institute for the students to exercise the option of completing the LL.M. Course within one and a half years: –
(i) ‘Special Circumstances’ means a student who has an exceptional academic record, securing at least 65% marks in the aggregate in the first two semesters, with over 60% marks in each paper, and having passed all the papers in the first attempt. In addition the student must have secured 80% attendance in each of the first two semesters.
(ii) A student whose research papers have been published or accepted for publication in a reputed journal/ publication, and
(iii) A student who has secured over 70% marks in at least two out of three research papers submitted in the first two semesters. A student opting for early completion of the LL.M. Course must also submit a synopsis of dissertation, which in the opinion of the Academic Programmes Committee is very good. Students who fulfil all the above criteria may be permitted to submit their dissertation early, but not later than December 31st of the third semester of the year on the recommendation of the Academic Programme Committee.
Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes 15 per cent seats are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and 71/2 % seats are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes. Any unfilled seats reserved for Scheduled Castes will be treated as reserved for Scheduled Tribes and vice versa. A certificate to this effect shall be attached with the application form.
Non Creamy Layer Other Backward Classes (OBC) students 18 per cent seats are reserved for candidates belonging to OBC. The OBC candidates if they wish to be considered under OBC Category should give Non Creamy Layer OBC declaration and undertaking with the application form for admission. The definition of Creamy Layer, the form of declaration and undertaking to be produced by the OBC candidates are enclosed at Appendix II.
Physically Handicapped 3 per cent seats are reserved for Physically Handicapped candidates. A Certificate from the Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Physically Handicapped, I.T.I. Campus, Pusa, New Delhi – 110 012 is required to be produced specifying that the applicant is fit to pursue LL.M. and P.G. Diploma courses.
Master of Laws (LL.M.)- (2 years)
The Common Admission Test consist of one question paper containing three parts.
- Part 1 - 30 Objective Type Questions with Multiple Choices relating to English Language and General Knowledge.
- Part 2 - 60 Objective Type Questions with Multiple Choices from following areas: Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, IPC, Public International Law, Commercial Law (Contract and Specific Relief Act, Partnership and Sale of Goods Act), Law of Torts, Law of Limitation and Family Laws.
- Part 3 - Subjective Type Questions to be answered in not more than 150 words from (i) Jurisprudence, (ii) Constitutional Law, (iii) IPC, (iv) Commercial Laws (Contract, Partnership and Sale of Goods Act) and (v) Family Law.

Viva-Voce
Short listed candidates based on the merit of Common Admission Test (CAT) shall be called for viva-voce to be conducted in the Indian Law Institute w.e.f. July 08, 2009 onwards. Details of selected candidates will be notified on the website of the Institute after completion of the vivavoce. Final merit list will be prepared based on the marks obtained by the candidates in the CAT and viva-voce i.e. out of maximum 150 marks.
