You can apply for the entrance examination only through “On-line mode”. The procedure is given in the website http://hsee.iitm.ac.in/aspr.html
If you follow the procedure in the above webpage an application form
shall be generated at the end that you can download. You need not have
access to a credit/debit card to apply online. The payment can be made
through bank challan that shall be generated online along with your
application. The application fees can be remitted at all branches of
State Bank of India and Indian Bank in India. The online application website shall be open from 7.00 AM of December 21, 2009 to 5.00 PM of January 21, 2010. The completed hardcopy of the downloaded application form should reach IIT Madras on or before 1700 Hrs on Feb 1, 2010.

Qualifying Examinations: Candidates
applying for HSEE-2010 should have either completed or be appearing in
2010 in any one of the following qualifying examinations:
The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized
Central/State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New
Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi;
etc. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a
recognized Board/ University. Final Examination of the two-year course
of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri
Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level. High School Certificate Examination
of the Cambridge University.
Any Public School/Board/University Examination in India or in any
foreign country recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as
equivalent to 10+2 system. H.S.C. Vocational Examination.
Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School
with a minimum of five subjects. In case the relevant qualifying
examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed
at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier
level.
Eligibility Criteria for Candidates: The
candidates belonging to the general category must secure a minimum of
60% marks in aggregate in their qualifying examination. Candidates
belonging to SC, ST and PD categories must secure a minimum of 55% in
aggregate in the qualifying examination. If any Board awards only
letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on
the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the
Board specifying equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of
joining. In case, such a certificate is not provided by the candidate,
the decision of the HSEE Admission Committee regarding his/her
eligibility shall be final.
Important Notes:
(i) All
provisional admissions to candidates will stand cancelled, if the proof
of having passed the qualifying examination, as per the eligibility
criteria specified in section is not submitted to the Institute latest
by September 30, 2010.
(ii) All
admissions will be subject to verification of facts from the original
certificates/documents of the candidates. If an applicant is found
ineligible at a later date even after admission, his/her admission will
be cancelled. The decision of the HSEE Admission Committee regarding
the eligibility of any applicant shall be final.
Date of Birth: Only those candidates, whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1985,
are eligible for HSEE-2010. However, in the case of SC, ST and PD
candidates, upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e., such
candidates, who were born on or after October 01, 1980,
are eligible. Only the date of birth as recorded in the High School
(10th std.)/first Board/Pre-University Certificate will be taken as
authentic. Candidates must produce a copy of this certificate along
with the completed Application Form as a proof of their age. At the
time of admission, the original certificate has to be produced failing
which they will be disqualified.
Physical Fitness: All
qualified candidates will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate
from a Registered Medical Practitioner in the prescribed format that
will be made available to them along with offer of admission letter.
They will be admitted only if they are physically fit for pursuing a
course of study at this Institute.
RESERVATION OF SEATS
1. SC/ST Candidates: 15%
and 7.5% seats are reserved for candidates belonging to SC and ST
categories, respectively. Candidates belonging to these categories will
be admitted on the basis of relaxed criteria [compared to general
category (GE) candidates]. SC and ST candidates should produce original
caste/tribe certificate issued by a competent authority at the time of
joining failing which they will not be considered for admission. While
submitting the completed application, the candidate needs to enclose
only an attested copy of the certificate. Seats remaining vacant in
these categories shall not be filled by candidates belonging to any

2. Persons with Disabilities (PD): 3%
of seats are reserved for PD (including leprosy-cured) candidates, as
specified by the Government of India, who are otherwise fit to pursue
the course and qualify HSEE with relaxed norms relevant to this
category. For any category of disability (viz., locomotor, visual,
speech and hearing), benefit would be given to those candidates who
have at least 40% permanent physical impairment in relation to a body
part / system / extremity / extremities / whole body etc. The
candidates in this category will be required to be certified by a
Medical Board of the Institute.

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS)
is one of the earliest departments established at IITM. The Department
is essentially multi-disciplinary in nature and has reputed faculty
from diverse disciplines such as Economics, English, Philosophy,
Sociology, History, and German Studies. The Department has been
offering doctoral programmes in humanities and social sciences and
elective courses to the undergraduate and post-graduate programmes of
the Institute. From the academic year 2006-07, the Department has
started a unique and innovative five year integrated master’s
programme, leading to Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in three disciplines
viz., Development Studies, Economics and English Studies.
The HSEE 2010 examination is for totally three hours duration and has two parts. Part I is a objective type multiple choice question paper for 2½ hours (150 minutes) administered through computer and Part II is an examination on Essay writing for just ½ hour (30 minutes) which has to be written on regular answer paper distributed to the candidates at the end of Part I.
Part I covers the following topics: (i) English and Comprehension Skill; (ii) Analytical and Quantitative Ability; (iii) General Knowledge covering the areas of Indian Economics (since Independence), Indian Society, Contemporary World Affairs (post-World War II); and (iv) Environment and Ecology. The Part II essay writing is on any general topics like current affairs and general knowledge.
Language of Question Paper: English.

Syllabus
1.ENGLISH (25% MARKS):
This
section tests the candidate’s ability to understand and use
grammatically acceptable English, to understand the nuances of language
and also appreciate literary language. Questions are related to the
following areas:
Reading skills
Candidates
will be required to read the given passage/s that aim to test their
comprehension skills, including literary competence, and answer the
questions based on the passage/s. This section contains multiple-choice
questions.
Grammar
This
part contains questions that test the candidate’s knowledge of
grammatical correctness. The questions relate to aspects of English
grammar such as sentence structure and usage, the use of tenses, verb
patterns, articles and active and passive constructions. The questions
are all objective type and include gap-filling, sentence completion and
re-ordering, and dialogue completion.
Vocabulary
This
section examines the candidate’s vocabulary skills. Candidates are
tested on their ability to understand the meanings of words in context
and in isolation, their knowledge of grammatical categories of words as
well as the usage of words.
2.ANALYTICAL AND QUANTITATIVE ABILITY (25% MARKS):
Numbers, Algebra, Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common
Multiple (LCM), Calendar, Basic Statistics – Average, Ratio and
proportion - Mixtures, Profit and Loss, Percentages, Simple and
Compound Interest, Work and time, Discount, Age sums, linear equations,
elementary trigonometry
Data Interpretation, Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, brainteasers, patters.
3.GENERAL STUDIES (IN FOUR PARTS-50% MARKS):
i) Indian Economics:
This
section is intended to test the understanding of some basic economic
concepts and awareness of key issues pertaining to the Indian economy
with a focus on the developments after independence. The concepts and
issues covered are:
Understanding
the Economy: Scarcity, opportunity cost, resource allocation, economic
systems and their characteristics, features of market economies, forces
of demand and supply, elasticity of demand and supply
Main
Features of Indian Economy: Natural resources; human resources-
population size and composition, literacy and education, occupational
distribution
Major
Economic problems: Poverty, Unemployment and Inequality - concepts,
measurement, trends, sectoral distribution and policies, inflation –
trends, causes and remedies
Economic
Growth and Development: Meaning and measurement of economic growth,
stages of development, national income concepts and trends, trends in
savings and investment; human development index, national policy on
education, health and health care policies
Planning in India: Five-Year Plans- objectives, priorities and problems
Sectoral
Development: agriculture – green revolution and technological changes,
current issues and policies; industry- evolution of industrial policies
in India (from 1948), strategies for industrial development, public and
private sectors, small and cottage industries, infrastructure,
transport and communication, service sector, consumer awareness
Foreign
Trade and International Economy: balance of payments, foreign exchange
reserves and trade policy, I.M.F., W.T.O., international aid for
economic growth
Money,
Banking and Public Finance: concepts of money and measures of money
supply, role of Reserve bank of India and commercial banks, banking
sector reforms; taxes, expenditure and government budget, concepts of
deficits, Finance Commissions
ii) Indian Society:
Structure
of Indian Society -- Indian Social Demography – Social and Cultural
Differentiations: caste, class and tribe – Institutions of marriage,
family and kinship – Political Institutions.
Social
Change in India -- Sanskritization, Westernization and Secularization –
Social Movements and Regionalism –– Panchayatraj Institutions –
Affirmative Action Programme of the Government – various reservations
and commissions.
History
and the Making of Indian Society -- Mughal era and the social changes –
British Raj – Sepoy Mutiny – Reform Movements in the 19th century -
Freedom Movement – Independence and the emergence of India.
Indian
Philosophy and Indian Thinkers -- Jainism and Mahavira – Budhha and His

iii ) Contemporary World Affairs (post-World War II ):
This
part of the examination will test the candidates’ awareness of the
contemporary world that we live in. Issues relating to history, polity,
society and culture since 1945 will be covered in this section.

the cold war and the nuclear race – disintegration of the
Soviet Union and the decline of communism – Arab-Israel conflict – NAM
